The term Backward Masking: the act of superimposing a message backward onto an audio recording. This term is often misunderstood, and for many years it has been loosely applied to any intelligible message found in audio recordings played in reverse it refers to any message that is intentionally superimposed backward on an audio recording. It is for the most part a technique used mainly in popular music where sounds or messages are recorded backward and then intentionally inserted into a musical track which is actually created to be played forward only. Then there is Backmasking which is unintentional and is closer to the science of Reverse Speech.

Even when trying to take Backward Masking seriously it’s hard, too much hype has been put into it, especially by Christian Fundamentalists during the 70s and 80s when Satanic Panic was ‘the thing’. All this being said we still need to realize that every example of Backward Masking we find on the internet comes with an answer already given to what we are supposed to hear leading us to be primed. Similar to the power of suggestion priming leads us with a bias opinion.

Before going further with examples of this in music I would first like to explain the science behind it all. Regardless of all the panic from Christians and possible publicity stunts pulled by musicians to call attention to their new album, there is more to it than that and it is the science of Reverse Speech.

We couldn’t talk about Backward Masking in music without understanding Reverse Speech. Can speech be decoded? As we progress with technology new software is rekindling the trend of backward messages, leading people to the curiosity of Reverse Speech which is a pseudo-science and needs more attention and could lead to numerous avenues to discovering what makes our brains tick. Something you say can actually be dual messages due to the way we process language. We have our conscious speech or forward speech and we have Reverse Speech another form of human communication that is automatically generated by the brain as we speak. A man named David John Oates discovered that recorded messages played backward at regular intervals contain grammatically correct sentences. It is mirrored to what is happening in the speaker’s subconscious. Associations with what we are doing, saying, and seeing in the external world arise from our subconscious. Reverse Speech then could be that voice.

If a person is lying in forward speech their reverse speech may reveal the truth. It is a new and emerging field and needs more studies. Our subconscious is full of memories and experiences of our lives. All kinds of forms exist in our subconscious – hatefulness, anger, love, kindness, false thoughts. Images and words around us can trigger a conceptualization within the subconscious that is not actually about what is happening in one’s environment at that time. We need to look at things from all angles and feel I do need to point out that Oates’s website does have products to sell which might make his work all a little questionable to some people.

Reverse Speech is found to be dependant upon Forward Speech and forms an integral part of communication. Both modes of speech combined communicate the total psyche of the person speaking. Does a recording even need to be played backward for a message to come across to us and understood subconsciously?

Beatles- “Rain”

in the 1960s the Beatles famously included several hidden messages in some of their songs. On their 1966 single Rain the message was “…the sun shines. Raaain. If the rain comes, they run and hide their heads” audible only when played backward. This was one of the earliest instances of Backward Masking. The deliberate reversal was repeatedly acknowledged by John Lennon and others.

Electric Light Orchestra-“Secret Messages”

Another band known for this was Electric light orchestra (ELO) their whole album ‘Secret Messages’ was in fact just that. These messages include: “Welcome to the show,” “Thank you for listening,” “Look out, there’s danger ahead,” “Listen to music,” “Hup two three four,” “Time after time,” “You’re playing me backward,” and “Plant a tree,”

Slayer – “Hell Awaits”

The thrash metal band incorporates numerous backmasking messages in their 1985 album, “Hell Awaits.” There is a soft yet unnerving chant saying, “Join us!” 45 times. Later on, lead singer Tom Araya claimed that they were just playing into the demonic imagery that was painted around the band’s identity, but it was never meant for sincere Satanic rituals.

Motörhead – “Nightmare/The Dreamtime”

Many people have associated Motörhead’s music with the devil and selling your soul. This song by Motorhead played forwards sounds like an angered growl but reversed it says, “Now tell me about your miserable little lives. I do not subscribe to your superstitious, narrow-minded flights of paranoia. I and people like me will always prevail! You will never stifle our free speech in any country in the world, ’cause we will fight forever.” When the song was released, Motörhead was going through an intense legal battle with their record company.

Judas Priest – “Better by You, Better than Me”

Judas Priest became a controversial band when two fans committed suicide after supposedly being influenced by the band’s lyrics. The backward message in “Better By You, Better Than Me” continuously repeats, “Do it.” One night in 1985 the two fans, Raymond Belknap and James Vance went to a church playground and shot themselves. Belknap died instantly and Vance survived the gunshot but died three years later due to complications from the incident. Before Vance’s passing, he stated, “We had been programmed. I knew I was going to do it. I was afraid. I didn’t want to die. It’s just as if I had no choice.” The fans’ parents took the band to court, but the case was dismissed as the judge ruled that the band was not liable for the deaths.

The Eagles – “Hotel California”

Supposedly if you take the time to listen to the opening verse backward you will hear the words, “Yes, Satan organized his own religion,” or “Satan, he hears this. He had me believe in him.” It might be silly to believe these hidden messages when the band themselves deny these claims, but strangely, you can make out those spooky messages. How could it be unintentional?

Led Zeppelin – “Stairway to Heaven”

The accusations of this timeless classic being a tune dedicated to Satan stems from other things the band has done. For example, guitarist Jimmy Page bought a mansion from the famed Satanist Aleister Crowley, and allegedly, he sold his soul to be successful and achieve fame. If this classic rock track is played backward you will hear, “Oh here’s to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan. He will give those with him 666. There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.”

Ash – “Evil Eye”

Ash intentionally inserted secret messages into their songs, in the track “Evil Eye” it says: “She’s giving me the evil eye. Suck Satan’s cock.”

Darkthrone – “As Flittermice As Satans Spys”

Formerly known as Black Death, Darkthrone is a band that is notorious for its anti-church lyrics. “Flittermice as Satans Spys” is off of their album “Transilvanian Hunger,” released in 1994. If you play the track backward you can hear clear as day “In the name of God, let the churches burn.” The writer of this song ended up in prison for…you guessed it burning down a church.

Cradle of Filth – “Dinner at Deviant’s Palace”

This song is creepy played forward but once you play the track backward, you will hear the “Lord’s Prayer being recited backward“. I am just going to show the album cover because I disagree with listening to this particular song.

Jay-Z “Lucifer 9” supposedly has a message of 666 Murder, Jesus 666 which you can find on YouTube but do we really need to know more than the simple fact of who the song is named after?

Styx “Snowblind”

When played backward it says “Satan Moves Through Our Voices“ though not the clearest compared to the rest so far.

Musicians and record labels have openly admitted to such messages be placed in music purposely. For the most part, I do believe these are publicity stunts. However, the darker the music and musicians seem to be the more likely these messages are deliberately satanic. Imagine if you were the devil especially having musical experience in heaven at one point, wouldn’t you want to reach out through all you knew which is music as well?. The choir was all Lucifer knew and then was expelled from heaven. This would definitely be the medium he would choose to gain his army here on earth.

The most important aspect to take from here if you do try to remember anything let it be the fact satanist do exist and I will be creating future blogs specifically on the topic. Backwards messages in music are no different, and a symptom if you will, of the spiritual warfare going on all around us. Understand that most Satanic masses revolve around chanting the Lord’s Prayer backwards like we see in Cradle Of Filth’s song, This is directly to Blaspheme Christ, this along with destroying religious artefacts and vandalizing churches.
